HIV in Bangladesh
Building on achievements
and aspirations to avert a generalized epidemic.
Since 1981, when AIDS was first manifested in the
United States, the worldwide scenario of HIV and AIDS undergone diverse
momentum. It has gradually affected many lives in different manners, differing
from country to country. The epidemiological evolution of HIV and AIDS makes it
clear that the changes faced today are different from what the world had faced
29 years ago and when it peaked in the mid-to-late ‘90s. According to the 2010
UNAIDS report on the global AIDS epidemic, since1999-the year in which it is
thought that epidemics peaked –the number of new infections has globally fallen
by 19 per cent. However, in some developing countries, HIV infectivity increased
by at least 25 per cent between 2001 and 2009. Among young people in 15 of the
most severely affected countries, HIV prevalence has fallen by more than 25 per
cent as they have adopted safer sexual practices. Young people’s knowledge and
abilities to protect themselves from AIDS is increasing but needs to grow
further.
