Changing the face of Bangladesh

Changing the face of Bangladesh
While many would say that our country has done remarkably well over the last few years with its average six per cent annual GDP growth rate, it is also true that it has the potential to do much more. However, while the private sector has made large investments for expansion of difference business sectors, their growth has suffered due to the lack of infrastructural support. We do not have enough electricity, the ports are jammed and the impregnable congestions and skyrocketing costs in the economic hub, Dhaka, is slowly eating away our potentials. However, there are many projects that have been in the works for a while which can change all that. From that list, we decided to take a look at the five largest projects that begin work soon and are bound to change the face of our country forever.

Rokibul Hasan talks about the Cricket                                            World cup selection
Bangladesh being a country of six seasons, people are expected to get emotional with whatever they are involved in. Cricket is no different when it is considered as a passion in Bangladesh. The reason I pick up this passion and emotion issue is simply to describe the people’s emotional outburst when they found their favourite Mashafi absent in the world Cup squad. To me it was predictable that professions, rallies etc would take place.

The golden land of Bengal yielded a golden harvest.

So much of the story is driven by confusion that I will begin simply. The concept of Pakistan-a nation defined by religion-flawed right from the beginning. Jinnah was not welcomed with his misplaced sense of devotion for Urdu in 1948 and the wayward military regimes ruling our nation for a land more than 700 km away were never really accepted. The spoke out clearly in ’52,’66,’69 and in countless other occasions; there never was an East Pakistan, it had always been Bangladesh.
Escape from under the nose of the devil

It was early March. The situation was utterly bizarre for, Lt S I M Nurunnobi, a Bengali officer, at Quetta School of infantry and Tactics in West Pakistan. All the regiments were disappearing overnight; all of a sudden, all flights of Pakistan International air lines to Dacca were occupied for the coming days. Unknown enthusiastic groups of ‘Civilians’, with their hair neatly trimmed, were flying to Tejgoan international Airport every day.

Cricket Over the Years

The first as solid as ever. However, in recent time, cricket had lost the flavour of competition as most of the international teams failed to perform at parallel levels. The cricket authorities witnessed a shaft in popularity among the young fans, as they started to become fonder of other sports such as football and basketball as the games are much competitive and of shorter durations. Naturally, the game had to evolve.
The pitch
The cricket pitch is considered the key component of a match. The fundamental principle is that you cannot play a good game if the of the groundsmen and the soil composition of the particular area. Soil composition is something that cannot be completely manipulated; however the groundsmen can be trained and supervised. Many cricket boards have already taken initiative to give a series of seminars to groundsmen, search for sources of good quality clay for each of the fields and also provide the necessary equipments to measure the bounce and pace of the pitches.

Bhutan Happiness

Bhutan’s happiness
Barsha Khattry write about the factors that make Bhutan smile.
The onset of anew year invariably nudges us to take stock of our lives, our needs, our aspirations and most importantly, our happiness. After all, is happiness not the driving force behind our actions, or at times inaction? What holds true for us at the level of the individual, does it also apply at the nation level? Is it possible to measure the happiness of a nation? Interestingly, Bhutan, the tiny land-locked nation in the eastern Himalayas has experimented with the idea of measuring national happiness. Gross National happiness is the Bhutanese alternative to Gross Domestic product, with the term first being coined in 1972 by the then King Jigme Singye Wanchuk. GNH is not just reported along side GDP but is the driving forces of all development projects in the country as well. The five year planning process that determines the economic development plans of Bhutan are guided by the GNH and all proposed plans need to pass a GNH review. Bhutan concern is with maximizing GNH rather than GDP. Bhutan chose to use GNH as a guide for its development plans rather than GDP for several reasons.

Conclusion-making Rebels into Stakeholders?
Taken the short life of the last Maoists government under observation one has to ask how far Maoist are, not in general, but at least in particular in Nepal capable of seriously running a democratic government and to deliver good governance. Of course, until the resignation of the ruling Maoists, the political establishment carried out all kinds of measures to destabilize the Maoists government and derogate their political performance. Nevertheless, the question which appears here is how the Maoists from a democratic government can and still keep their rebel force, the Young Communist League intact without being accused of various criminal activities as well as human rights violations but also of being an anti-systemic force? This is gaining special importance with regards to statement formulated in a typical revolutionary rhetoric of Maoist politicians, that violence is still an option for them. Doubts about the Maoist seriousness towards its commitment to democracy and development conflict resolution, were already cast during the 2008 Constitutional Assembly elections as they were maintaining their PLA. Despite the fact, that the involvement of the United Nations guaranteed, the peace process was not hampered by the Maoist ‘stick ness to their weapons’. This clearly indicates a major and current threat towards the democratic development. Later phenomena can be described as the ‘double standard’ of the Maoist, signing a peace accord to disarm, but nevertheless, maintaining their armed forces and gangs.

Prime Minister Monmahon Singh is a harassed man today. Despite his impeccable honesty and integrity of which there are few parallels in today’s South Asian politics-his government has now been coming under increasing attack from not only the opposition parties but also the Supreme Court of the land. The allegations of rampant corruption involving some of his ministerial colleagues in addition to his manifest inability to make any headway with regard to the huge amount of black money lying hidden in the Swiss banks and tax heavens have raised a fundamental question about his style of governance in less than two years of the UPS’s second regime honest personally? Or is it not also his duty to punish and bring to book all those offenders who have been looting and plundering this country with impunity for years together? According to the Indian Supreme Court, the back money stashed away in foreign banks is not just a case of tax evasion, but a mind boggling crime amounting to theft and plunder of national wealth. The indictment of the highest Court taking keen interest in the case of corruption, the government is now left with no choice but to become proactive in their efforts to recover the enormous wealth hidden abroad. In their latest report called The drivers and dynamics of illicit Financial Flows from India 1948-2008 the US think tank Global Financial integrity estimates that tax evasion, crime and corruption have moved gross illicit assets worth US$462 billion. The report also notes that the faster rate of economic growth since economic reform started in 1991 led to a deterioration of income distribution, which led to more flows from the country. Moreover, the poor state of governance reflected in a growing under ground economy which in turn has fuelled more transfers of illicit capital from India. The analysis is caste in terms of a pre and a post reform period spanning a total of 61 years since independence. More than anything else, the report clearly demonstrates that these illicit out flows contribute to the stagnating levels of poverty and ever widening gave between India
‘s rich and poor. The primary report findings include (a) from 1948 through 2008, India lost a total of $213 billion in illegal capital flight. These flows were generally the product of tax evasion, corruption bribery, kick backs and criminal activities (B) the present value of the flows is at least US $462 billion. This is based on the short term US Treasury bill rate as a proxy for the rate of return on assets. (C) India‘s aggregate illicit flows are more than the twice the current external debt of the US, $ 230 billion.

HIV in Bangladesh

HIV in Bangladesh
Building on achievements and aspirations to avert a generalized epidemic.
Since 1981, when AIDS was first manifested in the United States, the worldwide scenario of HIV and AIDS undergone diverse momentum. It has gradually affected many lives in different manners, differing from country to country. The epidemiological evolution of HIV and AIDS makes it clear that the changes faced today are different from what the world had faced 29 years ago and when it peaked in the mid-to-late ‘90s. According to the 2010 UNAIDS report on the global AIDS epidemic, since1999-the year in which it is thought that epidemics peaked –the number of new infections has globally fallen by 19 per cent. However, in some developing countries, HIV infectivity increased by at least 25 per cent between 2001 and 2009. Among young people in 15 of the most severely affected countries, HIV prevalence has fallen by more than 25 per cent as they have adopted safer sexual practices. Young people’s knowledge and abilities to protect themselves from AIDS is increasing but needs to grow further.

The chil factor How to shield your child from winter Tanzeela Amin Aureen

While the winter season is the time for merriment, the colder weather brings a more unpleasant event-the cold and flu season! Although coughs and sneezes are practically unavoidable during the winter months, there are ways of boosting your child’s immune system and keeping those away. Here are a few tips that may protect your child from this weather.
1. The most effective way to keep your child safe is by making them wash their hands on a regular basis. Ensure that they are washing them before eating and after their trips to the bathroom. The uses of hand sanitizers are equally effective. If your child is an infant, please make sure you are keeping his/her hands clean as they are more likely to touch things around them.                                            2. Teach your child to catch a sneeze. Encourage them on the use of tissue papers and to guard their mouths while coughing or sneezing. This prevents the spread of germs.
3. A healthy, balance diet is a fantastic way to help fight infections. Winter is that time of the year when you will get plenty of fresh produce. So use that to your advantage, try and give your child the freshest fruits and vegetables possible. Food rich in Vitamin-c can strengthen the immune system and speed recovery.
4. If your child does become ill, despite your best efforts, make sure you allow them plenty of time to rest. Sleep is one of the body’s ways fighting infections, so letting your child stay in bed will aid their recovery, as well as reduce the chances of spreading their illness.
5. Try and keep your child vaccinated. The influenza vaccine is the one vaccine that can prevent flu in winter. Influenza vaccination is the most effective way of for preventing influenza virus infection and its potentially severe complications.

Pak-Sino-Indian trilateral relations and the us.Aamnaa Yousaf Khokhar

Last weak could be dubbed as one of the most important periods in the political developments of three regional states, two of which are economic giants while the third hegemonic- but more important-than the others in the changing security and strategic situation of the world. Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Prime minister, paid’Histogic’ visits to Pakistan and India, while president Obama and his team conducted the review of the United States Afpak policy. China, Pakistan and India are locked in a trilateral relationship. Where China and Pakistan repeatedly describe their exemplary friendship as higher than the Himalayas as and deeper than the ocean, India and China remain locked in mutual mistrust and suspicion. However, if the two emerging economic powers get combined, they will become world’s largest economy within the next 20-25 years. The political development was most interesting, as on one end, regional players were seen sorting out their bilateral politics, and on the other, eyes were kept on developments taking place in Washington. Unfortunately, Richard Holbrook- president Barack Obama’s Afpak tsar- passed away, leaving behind an incomplete mission to resolve the conflict of the century. All these developments shall be analyzed point by point
